The Carolina Hurricanes may be buying out a former 3rd overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi may find himself getting bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes as they are facing some cap problems. People had high hopes for Kotkaniemi, but he has yet to live up to anything after 6 years in the NHL, which could lead to him being bough out by the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes just recently announced the extension of young forward Martin Necas after being involved in a bunch of rumours. The Hurricanes and Necas agreed to a two-year contract at $6.5 million AAV.

Since they agreed to terms with an RFA (Martin Necas) The Hurricanes now have a short buyout window, and it is believed they are going over their options to buyout Kotkaniemi.

Buying out Kotkaniemi isn't the best option, but they have limited choices as they still need to sign Seth Jarvis. If the Hurricanes were to buyout Kotkaniemi it would cost them $835k for the first and last three years of the buyout period.

For the three middle years of the buyout period it would also cost them $455k annually. The Hurricanes would obviously rather not buy him out, but this would free up a significant amount of cap space and they may have no choice.
