Surprising Player Officially Claimed Off Of Waivers
On Thursday, the Washington Capitals had a plan: they placed forward Matthew Phillips on waivers, aiming to assign him to the Hershey Bears in the AHL.
But sometimes, plans don't unfold as expected. On Friday, just before the 2 PM ET deadline, the Pittsburgh Penguins swooped in and claimed Phillips off the waiver wire.
The Penguins have claimed forward Matthew Phillips off of waivers from the Washington Capitals.
Phillips is signed through the 2023.24 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level.
It's a timely move for the Penguins, who are grappling with the absence of star forward Jake Guentzel due to injury.
With Phillips, they hope to bolster their offensive depth. Despite his limited production this season, Phillips brings potential and a fresh start with the Penguins.
