Connor McDavid moved the needle on what it takes to sign top NHL talent when he signed an eight-year, $100 million ($12.5 mil AAV) in the summer of 2017.
Nathan MacKinnon followed suit this past offseason when he became the highest paid player in NHL history at $12.6 million per season. It's now only a matter of time before Auston Matthews tops both MacKinnon and McDavid, and it may be by a lot.
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, Matthews and his agent are seeking a $15 million AAV on his next deal:
Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.
Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply ''hand it over'' to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger. Many suggest this will either price Matthews or Nylander out of Toronto as both are expected big pay raises.
