Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney had hardly been a fan favorite over the past few years. However, his current off-season moves have provided some sense of hope among B's fans.

After revealing that several key members of the squad would be out with long-term injuries, Sweeney secured some quality veterans down the middle for the upcoming season.

The franchise is reuniting its famous one-two punch at center, with captain Patrice Bergeron and long-time Bruin David Krejci returning to the mix on one-year deals.

Bergeron re-signed for his 19th season in Beantown on a one-year deal worth $2.5M, with an additionnal $2.5M offered in performance-based incentives. As for Krejci, he will rejoin the Bruins for a 16th season after inking a one-year deal for $1M and up to $2M in performance bonuses.

When taking a quick glance at those deals, Sweeney's magic is pretty obvious - the Bruins top two centermen carry a total cap hit of $3.5M, something not many NHL teams can brag about.

But the two contracts carry some other advantages. A deep dive into the reasoning behind the one-year deals that were offered, to both players that are over 35 years old, reveals some neat details.
