Reports have been going on for several weeks now that the Colorado Avalanche and Nathan MacKinnon were working on making the forward the highest-paid player in the NHL.

And today, that's exactly what has happened. Peter Baugh of The Athletic was the first to break the news:

''The Avs sign Nathan MacKinnon to an eight-year extension.''

Everyone knew that MacKinnon was going to sign an extension with the Avalanche, but the biggest question was whether he would be making more than Connor McDavid on his next deal. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the price of his contract not long after:

''The Avs sign Nathan MacKinnon to an eight-year extension.''

In a hilarious ending, MacKinnon is officially the highest-paid player in the NHL, making $100K more than the next highest McDavid. The contract will run until the New Harbour native is 36 years old, but there's no doubt the Stanley Cup champion is well worth it.
