GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings has made somewhat of a surprising move today.

As per Chris Johnston of TSN, the Red Wings announced they've placed a former first rounder on waivers:

Jakub Vrana (DET) has been placed on waivers.

Johnston continued:

Jakub Vrana recently went through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

His contract carries a $5.25M AAV through next season.

Earlier this season, Vrana checked himself into the NHLPA's lPlayers Assistance program, and just recently re-joined the Red Wings.

The 25-year-old has only played two games this season, registering a goal and an assist.

Vrana was originally selected 13th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2014, and was the main piece that headed to Detroit in the Anthony Mantha trade.

In 323 career games, the Czechia native has 91 goals and 98 assists, and helped the Capitals capture the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Given how pressed most teams are to the salary cap, it would be hard to believe that he will be claimed, but maybe a rebuilding team takes a good hard look. Vrana would most-definitely improve almost any team in the NHL.
