The Bruins selected the 6'4'' blueliner with their first pick of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Mason Lohrei has done nothing but improve since and has become one of Boston's top defensive prospects.

The big-bodied prospect played for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL last season, where he was named Defenseman of the Year and a First-Team All-Star. He had a dominating season in which he led all USHL's blueliners in goals (19), assists (40) and points (59).

Lohrei went on to suit up in the NCAA this past season. He recently completed his freshman campaign with Ohio State and was named to the Big Ten's All-Freshman team. He finished his first college season with 4 goals and 29 helpers in 31 games.

However, as noted on the Bruins website earlier today, the Wisconsin native is currently dealing with a lower-body injury but could decide on what steps he's going to take next in the coming weeks.

"[The Player Development staff of Adam McQuaid and Jamie Langenbrunner] have spoken at length to Mason," said Sweeney. "He's dealing with an injury, lower-body injury right now that he's kind of taking some extra timehe's kind of weighing that. We're going to meet with him and let that heal and then make the best decision with that information. There's not any urgency to rush through the healing process, and then we get a better feeling as to where he's going to go going forward."

Lohrei has yet to sign his first professional contract, so Sweeney will take his time before making any decision on the young prospect's future. It will be interesting to see if the Bruins management feel like he can contribute to either Providence or Boston's roster once healthy.

Regardless, the 21-year-old sure has a promising future.
