The Florida Panthers defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime to advance to the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs. It's the first time the Panthers have won a playoff round since 1995-96 when they lost in the Stanley Cup Final against the Colorado Avalanche. They won the best-of-seven four games to two over the Capitals.

Carter Verhaeghe scored his second overtime of the winner and third game-winner in a row off a nice pass from veteran Claude Giroux:

With two more points tonight, Verhaeghe is up to 6 goals and 6 assists to tie Connor McDavid for the NHL postseason lead in points.

The Panthers won the President's Trophy for their incredible 2021-22 regular season. However, the team to win the President's Trophy has not faired well in the postseason in recent memory. Six of the past eight President's Trophy winners have advanced passed the first round just to lose in the second round. The Chicago Blackhawks are the only ones to win the Stanley Cup in the past ten years (2013).
