Unrestricted free agent, Jake Virtanen, was hoping for a second chance when he signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) with the Edmonton Oilers at the beginning of training camp.

The decision to offer the PTO came with controversy for the Oilers due to Virtanen being charged (and later acquitted) for sexual assault.

However, in six preseason games with the club, the 26-year-old was only able to register one assist. The Oilers released the following statement this afternoon:

''The #Oilers have released forward Jake Virtanen from his professional tryout agreement (PTO).''

Virtanen was the Vancouver Canucks sixth overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and in 317 games, he registered 55 goals and 45 assists. After being released by the Canucks last season, he played for Moscow Spartak in the KHL.

With a poor showing in exhibition play and the baggage attached to his name, opportunities at the NHL level could be slim for Virtanen.
