It appeared that defenseman Bowen Byram kept the puck barely onside before setting up the Avalanche's first goal. After Jon Cooper and staff were given what was thought to be way too long of a time to challenge, he decided to go for it.
The call on the ice was a good goal, so officials needed sufficient evidence to overturn the call. After a lengthy review, the goal was called back, and it remained a 0-0 game.
It was reported that the goal was called back because of a camera angle not shown to fans.
It brings up the idea that the NHL should stop challenging for offsides to avoid the controversy. Hockey is a fast game, and the linesmen will miss a few, but ones like this are obviously way too close to call in real-time.
