Bergeron took a very obvious pay cut on his most recent contract with the Bruins when he signed a one-year, $5 million deal that came with a cap hit of only $2.5 million.
However, his former agent - general manager of the Montreal Canadiens - Kent Hughes, revealed that his last contract was no different. Bergeron and Hughes agreed to an eight-year, $55 million contract with Boston on July 12th, 2013.
According to Hughes, before Bergeron's previous contract was signed, the going rate for his services was north of $9 million per season, which was $2.5 million more than the $6.875 million to which he agreed.
