There comes with no surprise to hear that the National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman is under fire for yet another bad marketing decision.

NFTs or non-fungible tokens made a splash in the digital market awhile ago and have died down since.
NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are unique cryptographic tokens that exist on a blockchain and cannot be replicated. NFTs can represent digital or real-world items like artwork and real estate. At one point in time many NFTs were selling millions of dollars, now they aren't worth much most are less than a couple hundred dollars.

So, Gary Bettman had the bright idea to create some National Hockey League NFTs after all the hype was long gone.

The Matthew Tkachuk NFT shown above, which is a limited one copy, actually sold at auction for over $30,000 in support of two children's hospitals.

Upper Deck a sports card company is working with the NHL on these NFT collectables. Jason Masherah, president of super Deck said,

«There's a place for digital collectibles, but it was never done with the collectors in mind,» Masherah said. «And that's what we want to accomplish. We wanted to give collectors who wanted to collect digitally the opportunity to do so in a safe environment and not have to worry if their digital collectibles are going to be around in two or three years.»

Despite the brutal downfall of the NFT market and the NBA's poor attempt at bringing NFTs into the world of sports with the Top Shot NFT. It appears Gary Bettman and the NHL is not too concerned.
