TSN's Rick Westhead has brought attention to another distressing incident in minor hockey. In a recent report, Westhead outlined a lawsuit against a minor hockey coach in the London area, where parents are seeking $2 million in damages, alleging that the coach threatened and physically assaulted their child during a practice.

Following the filing of a misconduct complaint by the child's father on Oct. 15, the situation escalated, with the coach allegedly assaulting the father in a dressing room. The coach reportedly accused the father of being a public danger engaging in

"obscene and/or despicable behavior"
in front of others.

The local hockey association, co-defendants with Hockey Canada, is accused of hiring an investigator who was deemed

"incompetent, partial, unqualified, and/or biased,"
failing to refer the case to the police as required.

As a consequence of reporting the abuse, the family claims their child faced demotion in hockey levels and was stigmatized as

"weak"
and a
"problem player."
The lawsuit alleges that players and parents who supported the coach were rewarded.

It's disheartening to read about such incidents, especially considering the potential impact on the child involved. While the accusations against the coach are troubling, it's essential to ensure the child's well-being and ascertain if they are participating in the sport willingly and for the right reasons.

At this level of play, the focus should be on fostering a positive and enjoyable environment for young athletes.
