In the summer of 2019, Nazem Kadri blocked a trade that would have sent him from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman T.J.Brodie.

Eventually, the Maple Leafs made a deal with the Colorado Avalanche for Tyson Barrie and Alexander Kerfoot. A choice that paid off well for Kadri as he just recently won his first Stanley Cup with the Avalanche.

Fast forward to the summer of 2022, and the UFA Kadri decides to sign with the Calgary Flames; it doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it!

Kadri met with the Calgary media for the first time earlier today and, of course, was asked about the entire situation.

As reported by The Athletic's Hailey Salvian:

''In that particular moment in my career, I had played in Toronto for a long time, and I didn't see myself leaving...It had nothing to do with (Calgary). I think to clarify that is important.''

Basically, it had nothing to do with not wanting to go to Calgary and that he blocked the trade because he wanted to win with the team that drafted him.

The newest Flame also revealed that the club was interested in him from day one of free agency and that the moves they made this summer, especially under duress, excited him.
