No other player has had as much of an impact on one position as Bobby Orr did for NHL defensemen.
Orr was a trailblazer in his play style, and he literally changed how the game was played from the backend. The 1973-74 season was no different for the Bruins defenseman, as he set league history on this day 49 years ago.
As per author Mike Commito:
''On this day in 1974, Bobby Orr became the first defenseman in NHL history to score 700 career NHL points.''
Orr finished that season with 32 goals and 90 assists in 74 games. Sadly, he only appeared in 90 more games with Boston after that season.
But he did manage a career-high 46 goals the following season, along with a second personal best of 135 points.
