Scary news from the Bruins AHL affiliate in Providence, as forward Joseph Abate suffered a severe injury which required emergency surgery.

The injury happened during morning practice, and Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal was on the scene to describe the incident:

Scary situation at Providence Bruins practice at PC this morning as Joey Abate suffered serious skate cut to left wrist.

Stick tap for Dan Hickey of P-Bruins training staff for his quick work before Abate was taken to hospital.

Best wishes to Joey for a speedy recovery.

Abate who's in his first pro season in Providence, suffered the injury Tuesday morning. It sounds eerily similar to what happened to Evander Kane of the Edmonton Oilers earlier this season.

However, according to Divver - who provided an update this morning - it doesn't appear as serious as Kane's.

Update on Joey Abate of Providence Bruins, whose left wrist was cut by a skate on Tuesday:

Surgery went well. Doctor repaired the damage, which included a nicked artery and cut tendon. Very fortunate to escape more serious injury. Expected to be out 5-6 weeks

Amazing to hear that Abate was in high spirits prior to his surgery and is doing well afterwards too. The 24-year-old has appeared in 33 games with Providence this season, recording 3 goals, 2 assists and 62 penalty minutes.

The undrafted forward was signed to a one-year AHL contract back in April after three years with the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He also appeared in 105 career USHL games, scoring 16 goals and adding 31 assists for 47 points.
