Boston Bruins become the first U.S. expansion team in the NHL

On this day, 98 years ago, the National Hockey League expanded to the United States, naming the Boston Bruins the newest franchise in the league.
In 1923, famous sports promoter Thomas Duggan received the option for three NHL franchises in the United States. In turn, he sold one to Charles Adams, a grocery store mogul from Boston, who persuaded the league to grant him a franchise for the city of Boston, which occurred on November 1, 1924.
