Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron will be a free agent after the 2021-22 season. His eight-year contract that carries a cap hit of $6.8 million will expire, and he will be looking for a new one come July 1st. The captain has stated that he doesn't want to discuss a new contract until after the season, making it possible for him to become a free agent.
"My whole career, I've always had the extensions and the long-term deals, so I felt like this time, I just want to play this year and see how I feel, see where we're at."
Bergeron has said he wants to wait until after the season, but that doesn't mean he's leaving Boston. He's spent all 18 of his NHL season with the Bruins, and the 36-year-old would rather retire than leave the only team he's known.
The Bruins lost former captain Zdeno Chara to free agency in 2020, but I wouldn't expect Patrice Bergeron to do the same.
