The Pittsburgh Penguins are entering the twilight of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang's career.
With three more years with Crosby under contract the team is poised to try and contend for that time period. Now it appears that Brian Burke and Ron Hextall have decided that Mike Sullivan was the right guy to lead the group to one more Stanley Cup.
Yesterday, the Penguins announced a three year contract extension for Sullivan:
''Sullivan, 54, is undoubtedly the best coach in Pittsburgh's history, boasting a 297-156-54 record along with two Stanley Cups, but has yet to win a round since 2018.''
This contract will take Sullivan through the 2026-2027 season. Sullivan previously replaced Mike Johnston during the 2015 season, before winning the Cup in 2016 and 2017.
As a player, the Marshfield, Massachusetts native spent four years at Boston University before playing in 12 seasons in the NHL, one with the Boston Bruins. He was first a head coach with the Providence Bruins in 2002 before being promoted to Boston for the 2003-04 season. He was fired by then new GM Peter Chiarelli in 2006.
