Earlier today, it was announced that the Calgary Flames had signed Nazem Kadri to a seven-year, $49 million contract.
This move surprised many as it had been long rumoured that Kadri would be signing with the New York Islanders. After the signing, the Flames immediately took to elevating their salary cap situation.
The Flames then announced they were trading Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens. Monahan has one year remaining on his deal with a cap hit of $6,350,000, and it was clear moving this kind of salary was going to come at a price.
In 65 games last season, Monahan only posted 8 goals and 23 points. Now according to Nick Alberga, the cost is, in fact, a hefty one.
''Sounds like a 1st rounder going to MTL in deal.''
