Former Boston Bruins defenseman Urho Vaakanainen was stretchered off the ice last night after heavily falling into the end boards. The scary scene happened as Vaakanainen and the Anaheim Ducks were taking on the San Jose Sharks in preseason action.

As per Eric Stephens of The Athletic:

''Ducks defenseman Urho Vaakanainen was just carted off on a stretcher after skating into the end boards behind the San Jose just after Derek Grant scored a goal 9:46 into the game. Scary incident. Entire team skated over to check on him in obvious concern.''

Watch the incident below:

Looking at the replay, you can see that the defenseman got twisted as he made a play for a hard push to the net, and it appears he hit his head into the boards. The officials called for medical personnel, who almost immediately called for the stretcher.

The Ducks PR released this update shortly after:

Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time. Let's hope the former Bruin will be okay!

Vaakanainen was selected 18th overall by Boston at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in 31 games with the club, recording 6 assists. He was one of the main pieces that was sent to the Ducks in the Hampus Lindholm trade.
