On August 8th, the Bruins signed veterans Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci to one-year contracts. Captain Bergeron signed an extension at $2.5 million with $2.5 million, while Krejci is returning after a year away from the NHL for $1 million.
Sweeney's intention was to solidify his top two centre positions, and he did that with those two signings, and then some, by also acquiring centre/winger Pavel Zacha from the New Jersey Devils.
Bergeron and Krejci's purpose of reuniting is for 'one more kick at the can'' as they're chasing another run in the postseason, and maybe even one more Stanley Cup win like in 2011.
Will the returns of Bergeron and Krejci will be enough for another deep run for the Boston Bruins?
Bergeron is 37 but is coming off one of his most dominant two-way seasons, recording 25 goals and 40 assists and capturing his fifth career Selke Trophy (NHL record). Krejci, 36, left the Bruins as a free agent after the 2020-21 season, and returned home to Czechia. The longtime Bruins had 20 goals and 26 assists in 51 games for his hometown HC Olomouc of the Czech Extraliga.
Speaking of getting the band back together, the Bruins have also been linked to current Calgary Flames forward Milan Lucic, who spent the first eight seasons of his career in Boston.
As per Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now:
'The Milan Lucic back to the #NHLBruins trade rumors are trending again but cap numbers and logistics just don't seem to match up for the Bruins and #Flames to make it happen.''
'It makes even less sense than when I did the same thing two weeks ago. It's a great story that I'd love to see happen but one look at the cap situations for both the #NHLBruins and #Flames says nope!''
