The Boston Bruins relieved Bruce Cassidy of his head coaching duties on Monday evening in somewhat of a shocking announcement to fans and media around the NHL. General manager Don Sweeney spoke to the media on his decision to fire the Bruins head coach, who has been with the team since 2017.
Here are some of the key takeaways from his media coverage Tuesday morning.
What Sweeney's focal point behind the firing was:
"The coach has to have communication skills to bridge the gap between older & younger players. That's paramount now with integration. In a perfect world, all [young] players are overbaked ... but those are the challenges when you find a balance of development & infusion of talent."
"I just felt that the messaging and the voice that was going to be required...it just needed a new direction."
"It's not a comfortable position to be in when you've got a popular coach both publicly and with the amount of success he's had, it's going to be an unpopular decision, it's not going to resonate ... It didn't sit well with me, very difficult decision as I referenced both personally and professionally."
