The New Jersey Devils had no choice but to wait and see what Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens were going to do with the first overall pick.
Either way, they we're going to get an elite forward from the 2022 draft class.
Along with recent high picks in Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Alexander Holtz, Dawson Mercer and Ty Smith, the Devils may be set for years to come.
With the Canadiens selecting with the first pick the Devils had the second overall and selected:
The Devils went for a pick for position they need rather than taking the best available with Shane Wright.
