A change of plans involving Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman has been revealed
It appears the time for fans to get nervous has arrived, as we are in September and the Boston Bruins and RFA Jeremy Swayman have yet to reach a deal. If they were on the same page, you'd have thought they'd signed the dotted line already.
Jeremy Swayman is the only player on the roster, who hasn't been signed to a new contract with the team yet. All the while the Bruins have $8.64 Million cap space, does that mean Swayman is demanding north of $8.64 Million AAV? There have been rumors he's asked for $10 Million, but nothing confirmed.
According to the Boston Globe's Paul DuPont, the Bruins and Swayman could opt for a bridge deal instead.
Given that the Bruins have yet to use Swayman as a full-time No. 1, they are looking to ink him to a bridge deal, one of maybe 3-4 years, scaled up from his $3.475 million of last season. The number could be, say, $22 million-$24 million if stretched to four years, at which point he then would be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at age 29.
This could end up being a midpoint for Swayman at $23 Million projected, with a $5.75 Million AAV over a four-year period.
This would allow Swayman to set up his next deal based on Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin's contract, who is set to be one of the highest-paid goalies in the NHL.
The folly of all of this is the fact that Don Sweeney traded away Linus Ullmark before locking down Jeremy Swayman with a long-term contract.
Swayman had split the net with Linus Ullmark the last three seasons and has developed into one of the top young goalies in the NHL.
All the while, he's yet to play a full season as the Bruins' #1 goalie, playing 40 games or more.
His career averages are a .919 save percentage and a 2.34 GAA.
Bruins players are set to report on September 15th to training camp, the clock is ticking for Swayman and Sweeney.
