An NHL insider has unexpectedly placed Brad Marchand as a top trade candidate for the Boston Bruins.

A top insider in the NHL has revealed that Brad Marchand could be the Bruins next trade candidate following Jim Montgomery's firing.

It didn't come to Bruins fans that Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins ended up firing head coach Jim Montgomery.

Joe Sacco has since replaced him as the head coach. Sacco has been with the Bruins organization for 10 years now.

Following the firing of Jim Montgomery, captain Brad Marchand spoke out and blamed himself, along with the team for the firing of Montgomery.

"Very disappointing day, and also very frustrating is this [is] a reflection of our play. And it was avoidable. That's the tough part about this is that if we had done our job in here, he would still be around, so [we] feel terrible as a group, individually that we let a really good coach and a really good person down and the effect it has not just on him, but on his family. It's a crappy day."

Some more changes may come to the Bruins organization if the team still underperforms following the coaching change.

"But as a league source noted this week, 'I don't think anyone in Boston thought this is where they'd be at.' If the decision to replace Jim Montgomery with Joe Sacco behind the Bruins bench doesn't produce the desired results, some difficult personnel decisions will almost certainly follow."

Sacco had a pretty successful debut with the Bruins as they ended up beating the Utah Hockey Club 1-0.

We could see a surprising player hit the trade block if the Bruins are unable to build off of their first win under Joe Sacco.

According to Chris Johnston, a reliable insider, the Boston Bruins may look at trading Brad Marchand:

"This is not a player we expected to find on the Big Board, even if he's currently playing out the final year on his contract."

The captain is awaiting an extension with the team as he is in his final year of his eight-year $6,125,000 contract.

Earlier in the year Brad Marchand shut down a contract rumour that he was close to signing a three-year extension with the Bruins, so this would not be surprising if it was true.

If the Boston Bruins do end up trading their captain, it would shock more people then the firing of head coach Jim Montgomery did.
