Even Don Sweeney has acknowledged it, as the Boston Bruins top-six leaves a little to be desired.
Morgan Geekie has been on the top-six and has not been a top producer, or offensive powerhouse, despite being paired with Brad Marchand.
If the Bruins are to make it deep into the playoffs, they will need to find the perfect player for the right-wing position on the 2nd line.
During the 6-4 defeat against the Montreal Canadiens, Geekie only had three shots on goals. No points to add for the night.
And against the Florida Panthers, being on the losing end Geekie only had a shot-on-goal and hasn't been a factor in two regular season games.
If the Bruins are to find themselves as competitors down the stretch, there has to be an upgrade soon.
Of course, they do have an option in the AHL with the P-Bruins with Fabian Lysell, or Georgii Merkulov.
But it seems that Sweeney and company don't find them workable solutions, despite both forwards having lit up the AHL last year.
Merkulov scored 65 points( 30 G, 35 A) in the AHL with the P-Bruins in 67 games. They will have to decide what to do with him, trade him for a better option at forward, or actually call him up and place him on a line where he can succeed.
Merkulov was signed in April of 2022 and went undrafted in the NHL, a considerable steal if Sweeney can get any value out of him.
Merkulov is an RFA at the expiry of his contract, which at the moment is a 3-year, $925K AAV deal.
Whereas, Fabian Lysell scored 50 points in the AHL last season and couldn't crack the lineup. He deserves a closer look as well.
