The Boston Bruins have a lineup that lacks meaningful depth in the top six forward groups.

One or two forwards look out of place on the top nine, as they are more likely a better fit on the third line. Those forwards are Justin Brazeau, and Morgan Geekie, which means two spots that could be dedicated to a better player.

Don Sweeney has a continued mandate to make the Bruins a playoff contender, and where they stand now, they're not built for the post-season arguably.

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts Podcast, Sweeney wasn't with the Bruins front office on Friday and Saturday.

Could Sweeney be scouting the St. Louis Blues, and Columbus Blue Jackets for more affordable pieces to add to the forward group?

Or will he seek to add seasoned veterans from any of the four clubs above? The Toronto Maple Leafs have made Matt Benning available.

But are they looking at someone like Nick Robertson who could be a solution for the Bruins' lack of offense?

It's difficult to discern, as the Winnipeg Jets aren't likely to trade many more players as they recently swapped prospects with the Penguins.

«We had a difficult decision to make with this trade because we hold Brayden Yager in such a high regard as a person and prospect," Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas said. "After much consideration, we decided that the opportunity to add Rutger McGroarty was ultimately in the best interest of the Penguins. He possesses the combination of ability, leadership and competitiveness that the Penguins need to achieve our goals in the short and long run. We look forward to welcoming Rutger and his family to the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins.»
The Hockey News and Yahoo have speculated that Sweeney could be interested in the Sharks Mikael Granlund, instead of anyone wearing a Jets uniform.

Meanwhile, THW thinks Sweeney is after Frank Vatrano, who'd be an affordable option for the B'.

For now, though, it seems everyone is speculating and no one knows a true target for the front office. And given the team's recent public spat with Jeremy Swayman, they will keep mum until the deal is finalized with the other NHL team involved.
