Rathbone's recent waiver placement by the Vancouver Canucks, followed by his assignment to the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks, has created a buzz in the NHL.
It's widely believed that Rathbone may soon be on the move. Sportsnet NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on the situation, noting,
Friedman even suggested that Rathbone might consider requesting a trade for a fresh start. Rathbone, who had an impressive NCAA career with 53 points in 61 games over two seasons at Harvard, turned pro in 2020.
His initial pro season with Abbotsford was promising, but a consistent NHL spot with the Canucks remained elusive. In his 11 games with Vancouver, he managed a goal and an assist, followed by a less productive AHL stretch with five goals and nine assists in 37 games.
The Bruins currently have a solid lineup of left-shot defensemen, but the possibility of Rathbone joining the mix depends on Boston's general manager, Don Sweeney, who might need to clear cap space by trading Matt Grzelcyk or Derek Forbort.
If that scenario unfolds, Rathbone could become an intriguing option for the Bruins' blue line.
