The hockey community is mourning the loss of former player Maurice 'Moe' Lemay, who has passed away at the age of 62.
Lemay, who played six seasons with the Canucks from 1981 to 1986, was a respected member of the team. Drafted in the 5th round in 1981, he worked hard to make a name for himself. His standout season came in 1984-85, when he recorded 21 goals and 31 assists while playing alongside teammates like Patrik Sundstrom and Cam Neely.
After his time with the Canucks, Lemay joined the Edmonton Oilers in the 1986-87 season, where he achieved one of hockey's greatest honors-winning the Stanley Cup with the Oilers during their dynasty years.
In 1987-88 he would join the Boston Bruins, but wouldn't be with the organization for long. That year he would only play 2 games with the Boston Bruins, and the following year he would play 12 games with the Bruins, and 10 with the Winnipeg Jets. After that he would take his game overseas.
Lemay's career saw him bouncing between the AHL and NHL for a few more years, but he eventually took his talents overseas. He played in Austria, Switzerland, and most notably in Germany, where he found a renewed offensive touch.
His highlight in Europe came with a 96-point season in Germany's Bundesliga, making a significant impact in the European hockey scene before retiring in 2000.
Though Lemay wasn't a household name like some of his teammates, he left a mark in the hockey world through hard work and dedication. The news of his passing has saddened the hockey community, and the Canucks family where he made a name for himself, and while it's uncertain if the team will formally honor him, there's no doubt that Lemay made an important contribution to the sport both in North America and abroad.
Thoughts and prayers are with Lemay's family and friends through this tough time.
