Jim Montgomery has made waves with a controversial statement regarding David Pastrnak.

Given Pastrnak's extraordinary performance last season, where he scored 61 goals (the most by a Bruin since Phil Esposito in 1974-75) and accumulated 113 points (the most since Adam Oates in 1992-93), many anticipated a decline in his production this year, especially with key players like David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron retiring.

Montgomery, the coach, openly acknowledged his expectations of a tougher time for Pastrnak without Bergy and Krejci.

However, Pastrnak has defied these predictions, maintaining an impressive scoring rate through 15 games this season. With 11 goals and 13 assists, he's on pace for an astounding 60 goals and 71 assists in an 82-game season, totaling 131 points.

Currently tied for second in the NHL in points and fifth in goals, Pastrnak has exceeded expectations. His involvement in the Bruins' goals has increased to 48%, up from last year's 37.5% on a more offensive team.

Montgomery had foreseen the increased offensive responsibility on Pastrnak and communicated it during their year-end meeting. Pastrnak embraced the challenge, assuring Montgomery that he expected it and wasn't worried.

Contrary to expectations, there's nothing random about Pastrnak's success. His shot frequency is slightly lower than last year, and his shooting percentage remains consistent. The players on the ice with him also have a similar shooting percentage.

Although Pastrnak is scoring less at 5-on-5, there's room for improvement as the Bruins develop chemistry with new line combinations. His power-play performance stands out, not in his goal-scoring, but in his playmaking.

With seven power-play assists, Pastrnak has demonstrated a significant increase in setting up teammates, almost doubling his assist rate from last year.

Despite reasonable expectations of a slight regression, Pastrnak continues to elevate his game, surprising many with his consistent excellence.
