The Boston Bruins have a secret weapon in the AHL, with Michael DiPietro. Could he be the next Bruins backup goalie? Or the new starter?

The Boston Bruins have prospect goalie Michael DiPietro in the AHL playing with the Providence Bruins.

This season, he's played spectacularly with a record of 16-5-4, 1.91 GAA, and a .932 save percentage.

He's earned himself a look in the NHL with these numbers but will be blocked by Joonas Korpisalo.

The team's backup goalie at the moment.

Joonas Korpisalo hasn't had a stellar year for the Boston Bruins,, with a record of 9-6-2, 2.86 GAA, and a .892 save percentage.

Korpisalo's cap hit is $4 million, and he's in year two of his five-year deal with the Bruins.

In the meantime, Jeremy Swayman hasn't done any better this year after missing training camp, and arguably being overpaid after forcing the Bruins' hand.

«I think it could only go up from here,» Swayman said Monday when asked of the state of his game.

He's got a record of 18-17-4, 2.95 GAA, and a .898 save percentage this season.

A dismal outlook for the Bruins crease either way you look at it.

Maybe they should call up Michael DiPietro and give either one of their two goalies in the NHL a conditioning stint.

Jeremy Swayman is earning $8.25 million against the Bruins cap and has seven years left on the deal.

They have a huge decision to make, and DiPietro could give the team new life in the net.
