Jim Montgomery tried to jump-start the Bruins' offense by mixing up the forward lines for their game against the Carolina Hurricanes. But things didn't go as planned, and Boston ended up with a tough 8-2 loss at Lenovo Center.
The Bruins struggled all game, looking out of sync with missed passes and little sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Every time they tried to set up an attack, Carolina quickly shut it down and turned the play back the other way.
The Hurricanes took full control late in the first period. Within the last three minutes of the opening frame, they scored three quick goals to put Boston on its heels. Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring on a power play, followed closely by former Bruin Dmitry Orlov with another goal just 38 seconds later. Martin Necas then added a second power-play goal only 14 seconds after that.
Carolina scored three times with the man advantage, marking the third game this season where Boston has allowed three power-play goals.
Montgomery made a change in net midway through the game, pulling Jeremy Swayman after he allowed six goals on 22 shots. Two of those goals came off deflections by Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo while he tried to block shots. Joonas Korpisalo stepped in to finish the game, stopping 13 shots but allowing two more goals in the third period.
The Bruins hope to bounce back when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Catch all the action on NESN, including an hour of pregame coverage before puck drop at Wells Fargo Center.
