Rask Admits He Was Blindsided When He Got Traded To Boston
Tuukka Rask, the Boston Bruins' all-time winningest goalie, reflected on his journey with the team during a recent episode of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. Rask revealed that when he was traded to the Bruins from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006, he knew very little about the organization.
He recalled receiving the trade call while at a party in Finland and wasn't overly emotional about the move. Rask's initial plan was to stay in Finland for a year or two.
Despite being selected 21st overall by the Leafs in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Rask had minimal knowledge of the Bruins. He expressed his surprise, saying,
Upon entering his first NHL training camp, Rask adopted a determined mindset and aimed to be the best goalie. However, he didn't make the team initially and spent his early years with the Bruins' AHL affiliate in Providence.
Rask eventually made his mark in the NHL, forming a strong partnership with Tim Thomas. Although they didn't share the same level of bromance as some other goalie duos, Rask highlighted their solid relationship, which was aided by shared agents and Thomas' familiarity with Finland.
After 15 years with the Bruins, Rask retired in 2022, leaving behind an impressive legacy with 308 wins, a .921 save percentage, and a 2.28 goals-against average. He won the Stanley Cup in 2011 and led the team to two other Cup finals in 2013 and 2019.
Rask's journey from a trade in Finland to becoming a Bruins legend is a testament to his dedication and talent on the ice.
