A surprising development has been made regarding Jim Montgomery's future with the Boston Bruins going forward.

Don Sweeney, the General Manager of the Boston Bruins opened up and stated that the Bruins have started having contract extension talks with Jim Montgomery.

The 2024-25 season is the last season on Jim Montgomery's contract. The Boston Bruins have been super successful since Jim Montgomery became head coach in 2022. The Bruins have been considered one of the best regular season teams, but they need to figure out how to transfer that success to the playoffs.

According to NHL Trade Rumors, Don Sweeney stated that there have been talks between the two, but want to keep the details of the matter private.

"There have been talks, but I think Monty would take the approach of keeping that between us,"

Just because the Bruins have been in discussions with Montgomery, does not mean that he will be coming back after this year. The Bruins have stated they like Montgomery, but if he can't take his regular season success' and do something in the playoffs, he might be without a job.

The first season Montgomery was hired on to be the Boston Bruins head coach, the team went on to set an NHL record of most wins in a regular season going 65-12-5, and Montgomery would go on to win the Jack Adams Award.

Don Sweeney also said he's been in discussions w/Jim Montgomery on a contract extension, but nothing to announce at this point. Montgomery said it won't impact his coaching style whether or not there's a deal in place prior to the season, believed to be the last year of his deal

In two seasons with the Boston Bruins, Montgomery has a overall record of 112-32-20, and he seems to like adding youth into the lineup, as since he's been the head coach players like Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic, and Mason Lohrei have played big roles for the Boston Bruins.

This year the Boston Bruins are looking to add more youth to their roster, especially in the top-six, as the Bruins lost Jake DeBrusk in free agency.

Don Sweeney made it clear the Boston Bruins didn't want to look for a player in free agency, or through a trade, but rather find a player through the organization to replace Jake DeBrusk.
