Heartbreak for Toronto Maple Leafs as they let Jeremy Swayman slip through their grasp.

As the Maple Leafs Regret Passing on Swayman, a recent bombshell dropped by MassLive.com has sent shockwaves through the hockey world, exposing that the Toronto Maple Leafs had a golden opportunity to secure Jeremy Swayman during the 2017 draft, but it slipped through their fingers.

"The goaltender said that the Toronto Maple Leafs had their eye on him while he was playing in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. Swayman's agent thought that he was likely going to be a Maple Leaf by the end of the draft."

Alternative Leaf Choice

Opting for the 110th pick in the 2017 draft, the Maple Leafs settled on goaltender Ian Scott. Although Scott boasts impressive credentials, his career trajectory has taken a downturn since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2020, Scott's participation has been limited to just 7 professional games, 1 AHL appearance, and 6 ECHL matchups, with his stats in these outings leaving much to be desired. His career was cut short due to injury in 2022.

Hindsight Lament

Had the Maple Leafs made a different decision and chosen Swayman, who was drafted 111th, they could have secured a netminder who ranked in the top 10 for both save percentage and goals against average last season.

The lament is palpable as we imagine Swayman donning the Maple Leafs jersey and wonder about the impressive performances he could have delivered.
