Connor Bedard Snaps On Reporter When Asked About His Mom And Perry Rumours
On his inaugural visit to Winnipeg ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks' clash with the Jets on Saturday, newcomer Connor Bedard faced an unexpected reception from the media. The top overall pick found himself fielding inquiries about a scandal involving former Blackhawks teammate Corey Perry and unfounded rumors circulating about his mother, Melanie.
Addressing the situation, Bedard dismissed the online speculation as
"a bunch of nonsense."
Expressing the impact on himself and his family, he asserted the unfairness of the situation, emphasizing its fabricated nature. As persistent questions from reporters continued, Bedard's growing annoyance was apparent, according to observations by Jacob Stoller of the Hockey News.
Bedard's irritation is justified given the timing of the media confrontation in Winnipeg, occurring shortly after Perry's termination. The questions revolved around baseless rumors that were unequivocally false, a fact highlighted by Hawks' general manager Kyle Davidson during the announcement of Perry's termination earlier in the week. Davidson explicitly stated that no other players or their families were involved, condemning suggestions to the contrary as
"wildly inaccurate" and "frankly, disgusting."
Perry, in his own released statement, denied the absurd allegations without directly naming his young teammate. The story had gained significant traction on social media, rendering explicit references unnecessary. Perry expressed remorse for the impact of his actions, clarified the situation's lack of involvement with teammates or their families, and apologized to those negatively affected.
Despite being named rookie of the month for November, Bedard should not have to contend with such unwarranted scrutiny, and neither should his family. His composed and mature response to the situation is commendable, and it is hoped that further attempts to stir controversy around the young player are discouraged.
