At 22 years old, Xhekaj has tallied just one goal and three points in 17 games with the Canadiens this season. Wednesday evening marks his debut AHL game against the Belleville Senators.
Adding an intriguing layer, former Habs enforcer turned media analyst Georges Laraque shares insights that Xhekaj experienced a rift with head coach Martin St. Louis. Allegedly, St. Louis criticized Xhekaj for playing "too aggressively," delivering a stern rebuke in front of teammates after a loss.
Laraque elaborates further in his complete statement (En Francais):
Essentially, Laraque suggests that St. Louis' critique occurred publicly, challenging Xhekaj to refine his style, a challenge the young defenseman has met. However, the adjustment hasn't seamlessly integrated him into the team's current needs. Laraque even speculates about the possibility of Xhekaj seeking a trade to resolve the situation.
It's a concerning development.
While lacking Laraque's firsthand knowledge, it's hard to fathom that the relationship between Xhekaj and St. Louis is irreparable. Both are no-nonsense individuals with a deep commitment to their craft. St. Louis, despite minimal coaching experience, has succeeded in the NHL through tenacity. Similarly, Xhekaj, who transitioned from shelving at Costco to making the Canadiens' roster, is cut from the same determined cloth. His stint in the minor leagues may well prove beneficial in the long run. Stay tuned for further developments.
