He suffered from a prolonged battle with cancer and was surrounded by his family when he succumbed to his disease. NBA commissioner Adam silver gave a statement on the late Hall of Famer.

«Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,» «As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.

Walton had a storied career in the NBA as he played for UCLA from 1971 through 1974. He was chosen first overall pick in the 1974 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. And his playing career went from 1974 through 1988.

He had won two NBA championships with the Trail Blazers and the Boston Celtics. And was the NBA Finals MVP in 1977.

Walton suffered from health trouble especially later on in his career to which many were wondering if he could play for the Celtics long term. Walton pushed through and helped the Celtics win the championship and he also won the 6th man award and the regular season MVP that year in 1986.
