The Washington Capitals announced big news this morning that captain Alexander Ovechkin is taking a personal leave from the team.

The club's PR team released the following statement:

''Washington Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today that captain Alex Ovechkin will be away from the team to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one.''

Sad news for the Ovechkin family, as it sounds like they're going through something very tough right now.

The Capitals host the Hurricanes tonight, the Panthers on Thursday and are then travelling to play the Stadium Series in Raleigh on Saturday. It has not been announced how much time Ovechkin will miss, however.

The 37-year-old continues to fill the net as he's tied for 8th in NHL scoring with 32 goals. He once again leads his team with in points with 54 in 54 games this season.
