General manager Don Sweeney has been working the phones today, and the Boston Bruins have officially made a trade.

News broke less than an hour ago that the Washington Capitals were scratching both Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway for ''trade related reasons'', and now, we know why.

The Bruins have acquired both Orlov and Hathaway from the Capitals for multiple picks. Early reports were that Connor Clifton, Jakob Zboril and Craig Smith were going the other way.

However, Conor Ryan of Boston.com recently shared the full details of the deal:

Trade is official:

Bruins acquire:

Dmitry Orlov
Garnet Hathaway

Capitals acquire:

2023 first-round pick
2024 third-round pick
2025 second-round pick
Craig Smith

Washington also retains 50% of Orlov's salary.

According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Minnesota Wild were also the third team involved.

Orlov, 31, a two-way, top-four defender, has spent his entire career in Washington since being drafted 55th overall in 2009. The Russian has 256 points in 686 games, including 3 goals and 16 assists in 43 games this season.

Hathaway, also 31, will be a pleasant surprise for Bruins fans as a fourth liner. He's mean, kills penalties and has been known to score big goals. In 59 games he has 9 goals and 7 assists.

Best of luck to Craig Smith in Washington! He'll surely be missed in Boston.
