Sweeney was hired on May 20th, 2015, taking over from former GM Peter Chiarelli, just a month shy of the 'infamous'' 2015 NHL Entry Draft for the Bruins.
That year's Draft was in Florida, and it was memorable for several reasons. Most notably, Connor McDavid was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers, followed by the likes of Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, Timo Meier and Mikko Rantanen to round out the top ten.
However, the Bruins and Don Sweeney had an opportunity to have one of the most historic drafts in recent memory. After trading Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames for the 15th overall pick, and Milan Lucic to the Los Angeles Kings for the 13th overall pick, his club now had three consecutive first-round picks (13th, 14th, 15th).
With those picks the Bs selected Jakub Zboril, Jake Debrusk and Zachary Senyshyn, the next three picks were Mat Barzal, Kyle Connor and Thomas Chabot, all future All-Stars and elite NHL players.
Besides maybe DeBrusk, it's safe to say that Sweeney missed out on all three of those picks.
Sweeney and Boston's President of Hockey Operations, Cam Neely, have had to answer for that draft for the past seven years, and rightfully so.
But Neely has had enough of it, suggesting that everyone makes mistakes and (aside from the first round of 2015) the Bruins have drafted well.
That may not be the case, as according to HockeyProspecting, Boston currently boasts the NHL's 32nd-rated skater-prospect group and the 31st-rated goaltending-prospect group.
