With training camps set to open in just over one week, teams are rounding out their lineups by signing players (mainly veterans) to professional tryouts in an attempt to garner some competition for depth roles.
On Tuesday, the New Jersey Devils made one of those, announcing that they had signed a former fourth overall pick to a PTO.
Appearing in 456 games (all with the Islanders), the 33-year-old has collected 22 goals and 95 assists. However, since the 2020-21 season, Hickey has only skated in seven NHL games with New York due to injuries and the emergence of a young Devon Toews.
Hickey was once an NHL regular with the Islanders but hasn't been the same since the death of his older brother Dan. Hopefully, a new start will help the veteran find a spot in the league once again!
