Former Bruin legend on the brink of NHL record, likely to be traded soon after

On Tuesday night, when the New York Islanders take on the Seattle Kraken, a 44-year-old Zdeno Chara will tie Chris Chelios' NHL record for most games played by a defenseman. On Thursday night, against the Los Angeles Kings, he'll have the record to himself.

Chara, the longtime Bruins' captain, skated in 1023 games for the black and yellow before joining Washington last season and the Islanders (for a second time) in 2021-22, which is likely to be his last in the League. Whispers around the NHL are that once he sets the record in an Islanders' jersey (the team which originally drafted him in 1996) on Thursday, Isles' GM Lou Lamoriello will accommodate a trade to a contender out of respect for Chara, to give him one last chance at Stanley Cup glory.
