Matthews was the first to 50 in the NHL this season, and now, he's the first player to get to 60 with two goals tonight against the Detroit Red Wings and probably will be the only one. Draisaitl is currently in second place in goals, sitting at 55 with just two games remaining.
There has been an abundance of 50 goal scorers this season in the NHL, with four players already: Auston Matthews (60), Leon Draisaitl (55), Chris Kreider (51) and Alexander Ovechkin (50). There are also a few players who are close: Kyle Connor (45), Kirill Kaprizov (45) and Connor McDavid (44).
With four 50-goal scorers this season, it's the most in the NHL since the 2005-06 season when there were five different players who reached the milestone. Matthews is also the first to score 60 since Steven Stamkos (60) in 2011-12, while Ovechkin was the only other to do it this century with 65 in 2007-08.
The most 50-goal scorers the NHL has ever had were fourteen back in the 1992-93 NHL season, and it's safe to say that record could stand for a while longer. Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne led the league with 76, and there were two others to score over 60 that season.
Auston Matthews is the first Toronto Maple Leafs' player to score 60 goals in franchise history, and he did it in typical Matthews style with a wicked wrister.
