We had an EBUG (Emergency Back-up Goalie) on the final day of the NHL regular season!

It was in last night's game between the Anaheim Ducks and the Dallas Stars.

Thomas Hodges started the third period for the Ducks after injuries to their starter John Gibson (upper body) and their backup Anthony Stolarz (lower body). Hodges entered with the game tied 2-2, and gave up one goal (powerplay) on three shots he faced.

Born in Shropshire, England, he moved to Dallas, Texas, when he was eleven and joined the club hockey team at Southern Methodist University in Dallas when studying journalism.

Hodges was invited to practice and eventually signed a contract with the Allen Americans of the ECHL in 2016-17. During his time in the ECHL is when he was selected as an EBUG in the Dallas area.

Hodges was congratulated by both the Ducks and Stars after the game, which ended 4-2 in favour of Dallas:

He was also made available to the media after the game, where he discussed that he actually lost the sight in one eye when he was young:

"I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, but when I was 12-years old, I lost the sight in my left eye ... I was playing hockey and took a puck off the head ... It was just kind of a freak thing. I sell life insurance. So if anyone needs some life insurance, let me know."
