Amid all the reports of the Boston Bruins targeting Vladislav Gavrikov or Jakob Chychrun, general manager Don Sweeney shocked the hockey world when he went out and acquired Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals.

The ''main piece'' of the deal was Orlov, an established top-four NHL defenseman, but what about Hathaway?

The career bottom-six forward has made a living killing penalties, being mean and scoring the odd goal. Like this one a couple of weeks ago at TD Garden:

It turns out, he grew up cheering for the Bruins in Kennebunkport, Maine. Hathaway's agent Matt Keator shared his client's initial reactions to the trade. Per Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic:

''He's disappointed to be leaving the boys but he's excited to live out his childhood dream of playing for his hometown Bruins. He's kinda made to be Bruin because he plays the style that the fan base loves.''

''Basically the comments on Twitter have been, I guess we have to go from hating Garnet Hathaway to loving him.' ''

Hathaway has appeared in 59 games with the Capitals this season, registering 9 goals and 7 assists. Undrafted, the 31-year-old has gone on to skate in 432 NHL games in Washington and Calgary, collecting 116 points along the way.

According to Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal, he's a really good guys too!
