Last night defenseman Jeff Petry made his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins after he was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Mike Matheson earlier this summer.
Six minutes into the second period, Petry received a two-minute penalty for roughing as the veteran punched an unsuspecting Jonatan Berggren in the back of the head.
The NHL Department of Safety released this statement after reviewing the incident:
''Pittsburgh's Jeff Petry has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Roughing Detroit's Jonatan Berggren.''
Postgame, Petry issued the following statement.
''I was just trying to punch/push the top of shoulder to kind of knock him off balance. It grazed off the top of his shoulder and went up. I wasn't trying to punch him in the back of the head or anything like that.''
