Concussions and long-term head injuries have been a very controversial topic in hockey.

While fans and players alike enjoy the hitting aspect of the game, there has been a push to make the game significantly safer for players. The NHL has begun to focus on targeted hits to the head, but there is still room for improvements.

One of the critical elements is scientific research, and Jonathan Huberdeau has made it official to make a significant donation.

As per TSN's Rick Westhead:

''As an NHL player, I'm very aware of the impact of traumatic brain injuries, concussions and the link to other mental health issues.''

'I'm proud to support Canadian military veterans by pledging to donate my brain to Project Enlist and support research to improve the quality of life of all military personnel who so bravely and courageously served our country.''

- Jonathan Huberdeau

Five years ago, then-New Jersey Devils defenceman Ben Lovejoy became the first active NHL player to commit his brain to CTE research.

Huberdeau was drafted third overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2011 Entry Draft and has appeared in 671 career NHL games, recording 198 goals and 613 points. The 29-year-old is entering his 11th NHL season and first with the Flames after the trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Panthers.
