Legendary coach Jerry York revealed he was retiring on Wednesday after spending the past 50 years of his life coaching NCAA Division I hockey.
York, who spent 28 of those seasons at Boston College, has the most wins in NCAA hockey history.
He is also a five-time NCAA champion and has been a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, in the builders category, since 2019.
The 76-year-old retires with a 1,123-682-128 record over 50 seasons in which he coached Clarkson University, Bowling Green State University and Boston College.
He won his first national title with Bowling Green in 1984, and went on to add four more with B.C. in 2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
York has guided Boston College to nine Hockey East tournament titles and 12 regular season championships and was named Hockey East Coach of the Year five times: in 2004, 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2021.
York has also coached many players who have gone on to enjoy stellar NHL careers.
His ex-players currently in the NHL include forwards Cam Atkinson, Brian Boyle, Johnny Gaudreau, Kevin Hayes, Chris Kreider, Alex Newhook, Alex Tuch and Oliver Wahlstrom, defenseman Noah Hanifin, and goaltenders Thatcher Demko and Spencer Knight. The Bruins latest addition, rookie Marc McLaughlin, also played his college days for York.
York, who was hired by Boston College in 1994-95, said he was retiring to spend more time with his family and to enjoy some more golf.
